The Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture was established in 2001 to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in poorer regions of the world.
Since its beginnings, the Foundation has been instrumental in delivering sustainable agriculture initiatives for pre-commercial smallholders.
In recent years Syngenta Group has been strengthening its own strategic efforts to support commercial smallholders with innovative and transformative solutions. This includes improved access to products, agronomic training, and markets, and a large network of agricultural centers across China, Africa, Asia, and Central America.
In 2022, the Syngenta Group Board therefore decided to phase out its financial support of the Foundation.
As a result, the Foundation is closing its headquarters in Switzerland in 2024. At the same time, Syngenta is financially supporting the establishment of three fully independent entities to take forward the Foundation’s legacy operations in Bangladesh, India and Kenya.
In addition, former Foundation employees in Senegal, Nigeria and Mali have created new independent entities to support pre-commercial smallholder farmers. The independent, local foundation in Indonesia, established in 2020, is also continuing its work.
